Resolution presented to Congress after last week’s violent assault on Capitol Hill by Trump supporters.
Members of the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of incumbent U.S. President Donald Trump under the 25th Amendment, following chaos on Capitol Hill last week when supporters of the president broke into the building.
Members were massively divided along party lines during the vote.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Vice President Mike Pence will have 24 hours to respond.
Pence already has rejected use of the 25th Amendment, which makes Trump’s impeachment more likely, analysts say. A number of Republicans have now broken ranks to say they will support the move.
