After a week in which several companies revealed their hand a bit early, the once-Las Vegas-based CES goes live for 2021 and officially kicks off today.
Judging from what we’ve seen and heard before, it’s likely to be a quieter show than usual, as many small businesses and startups are ditching the event online only. The realities of a pandemic have slowed production, not to mention the addition of additional barriers to building and iteration of new devices. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be lots of product announcements, especially for televisions and PCs.
It would have been my tenth CES, so it’s a little weird not to be in Las Vegas for the start of the year. However, I won’t miss the aggressive air conditioning, the traffic jams to get to places and that brutal jet lag.
Remotely, and in our normal time zones, our team will report on all the most important announcements and what you can expect from the technology in 2021. Let the CES PC Flood begin!
HP’s CES display is a combination of new devices and upgrades. HP claims that its new, multitouch-capable 16:10 IPS display on the Envy 14 has an 11% larger viewing area than a typical 16: 9 display. You will get up to 16.5 hours of use on a single charge, with 11th Generation Intel Core processors and up to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q graphics card. A balloon mission will also detect neutrino signals.
NASA has chosen to study more concepts of small satellite and balloon missions to explore the cosmos, and this time the goals are particularly ambitious. All four are part of a recently established Pioneers program, which promises to help relatively new researchers conduct experiments, but only as long as the mission hits a $ 20 million cap. While this is inexpensive compared to many NASA missions, there is a chance that the concepts will be lost if they run over budget.
The first small satellite, Aspera, will study the evolution of galaxies by monitoring ultraviolet light from hot gases in the space between these galaxies. Pandora will attempt to separate the signals from 20 stars and their 39 exoplanets by scanning infrared and visible light. StarBurst, meanwhile, will look for gamma rays from events such as neutron star mergers and gravitational waves.
There is only one concept of a balloon mission, but it could be particularly important. PUEO would launch from Antarctica and detect very high energy neutrino signals. Continue reading.

How’s the New Years fitness resolution going? It’s hard to focus on workouts, but companies aren’t going to stop coming up with better ways to get fit at home. Wondercise, whose system already works with Apple Watch and Garmin devices, adds a new “multipoint matching system” and new IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensor straps potentially increasing the accuracy with which you can track shape and reflect training movements.
Currently, Wondercise’s videos focus on yoga, tai chi, HIIT, strength training, and similar exercises. The company plans to add more over time, which involves tweaking its motion tracking algorithms to accommodate the motions featured in the new routines.
While Wondercise has yet to release pricing information for its new sensors, we do know that they will be available in a two-pack when they launch later in Q1 2021. It’s worth mentioning that Wondercise is quite affordable compared to other home workouts service delivery. VIP access to the service costs $ 5 per month or $ 35 per year (about half the cost of Apple Fitness +) and has more portable options than Fitness +. Continue reading.

Chip shortages aren’t just affecting new phones, PCs, and gaming consoles, not in 2021. Ford and Nissan are cutting production in response to semiconductor shortages. Ford is idling an SUV plant in Kentucky this week, increasing downtime previously scheduled for later in 2021. Nissan, meanwhile, is cutting production at one of its plants in Japan.
Other car manufacturers may also have problems. Volkswagen said in December it was shifting production in China, Europe and North America due to the shortage. Continue reading.
