Google’s predictive ‘smart dialing’ arrives in Pixel phone chat apps

Google kicked off an update cycle that started around the time it dropped the Android 12 developer first look last week. He has since announced a a bunch of new features for android devices, and today it shares a few more improvements coming to Pixel phones. These features appear to be in the process of being rolled out and include changes to the Recorder app, an underwater upgrade for photography, and Smart Compose coming in more apps.

Google powerful Recorder app launched as a rival at Otter.ai in 2019 and showed notable differences. Unlike Otter, the Recorder app used machine learning on the device to transcribe your interviews, so your sensitive information didn’t get passed anywhere unless you decided to share it. But Otter had a more powerful online editor that made it easier for you to edit your transcripts, which is a blessing because no service is always perfect for interpreting what you or your interviewees have said.

Now Google is launching a new site at recorder.google.com and makes it easy to share your audio files along with their transcripts so that people without Pixels can also read and listen. The recorder has the potential to be a great accessibility tool as you can use it to record audio clips and generate an animated transcript to share in MP4. But the usefulness of this feature is highly dependent on the accuracy of the transcription, and having a new portal and a new way to share these clips could make this tool more inclusive.

Google Smart composition tool originally appeared to suggest ways to supplement our messages in Gmail and Docs, and it’s now extended to chat apps. Thanks to GBoard, the feature will be available on Android Messages, Google Chat / Hangouts, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Verizon Messages, Line, Telegram and Slack. When you’ve enabled Smart Compose and start typing in one of these apps, you’ll see suggestions on how to complete your post based on what Google’s machine learning has deemed appropriate or common. You can drag the space bar to accept the suggestion (just like you would on the Gmail mobile app).

The company is also announcing a way to use the Pixel Camera underwater … by putting your phone in a Kraken case. If you are planning to go scuba diving, you can get the Kraken Sports Universal Smartphone Case to take your Pixel with you and use things like night view and Portrait mode. If you’re wondering why you can’t use another rated case to protect your phone underwater instead of that $ 325 option, Google told Engadget that it actually created a native camera integration with this. case that works via bluetooth. It is more likely to provide clear images at greater distance or pressure (and is one of the few cases rated to withstand pressure in deep water).

If you’re using a Pixel cradle to charge your device, you’ll see a new bedtime screen with redesigned notifications to ‘help you fall asleep’. Google said it would be “more transparent” and that, based on the renderings, the overall appearance is cleaner than before.

Finally, Google is also releasing a set of new wallpapers for Pixel phones celebrating International Women’s Day on March 8. These feature works by the Spanish duo Cachetejack and focus on “the strength and transformation of women”. While not all of these updates may seem immediately useful to all users, you might appreciate Google’s approach of releasing new features in batches throughout the year instead of waiting for a date. arbitrary every year.
