Google now owns Fitbit | Engadget

Google has finalized $ 2.1 billion purchase of Fitbit, more than a year after the the deal was first announced. EU approved the acquisition in late December, paving the way for Google’s ownership of what is perhaps the best-known brand for mainstream fitness trackers. James Park, co-founder and CEO of Fitbit reiterated in a letter today that Fitbit would continue to be device independent, creating products that are compatible with iPhones and Android devices.

Google’s Park and Rick Osterloh also reaffirmed that the deal was still “devices, not data.” It’s a shortcut for Google and Fitbit’s commitment to keeping user data private in the future; Park said that “data on the health and well-being of Fitbit users will not be used for Google ads and this data will be kept separate from other Google advertising data.”
