AT&T touts big HBO Max subscriber gains, but many of them don’t pay

WarnerMedia’s bet for Wonder Woman 1984 release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in December, as well as two recent major distribution deals with Amazon Fire TV and Year, seems to have paid off in attracting customers to the cutting edge streaming service. But with that growth comes a catch: Many of those new subscribers don’t actually pay the price of the HBO Max sticker and instead activate their existing HBO accounts for free.
