Touch, like getting a hug releases oxytocin in your brain. This hormone contributes to our general well-being and our ability to to manage stress. This is one of the reasons we swaddle newborns. But we don’t always have someone to rush us, especially a year after that pandemic. This is where a good weighted blanket comes in.
Weighted blankets use deep pressure to simulate the feeling of being gently held. Pressure has been touted as a way to combat insomnia and anxiety. the Cuddle machine, for example, invented by Grandin Temple, uses pressure to calm people with autism who dislike physical contact with others. (There isn’t a lot of scientific research on this, however, so you should discuss this with your doctor.) A weighted blanket isn’t a cure for anything, but it might help you feel better. My colleague Jess Gray and I both suffer from anxiety disorders, and these blankets have been rewarding, helping us manage our anxiety. We’ve tested several – here are the best.
